Izu Touring 2008

The muse isn’t moving me to write a real touring report, but we had another great ride, mostly along the same route as last year.
This time, my old friend Kaze joined us from Osaka, and we got some great shots with his helmet cam despite the overcast. Unfortunately, the clouds mean that you can’t see the Pacific Ocean on both sides of the peninsula, but I think it turned out OK.

  2. Hello. it has been a dream of mine to take a 5 day tour in Hokkaido and I need some advise from someone who has been there and done it. I was thinking of going from Sapporo north to the top and back in a circle. Can anyone give me some advise. Me and one other gaigin guy and Japanese girlfriend are renting bikes and doing this in mid June. Would like to stay at smaller places, biker inns and onsens. Ride the scenic ways. Enjoy the views and local flavor. We are both experianced riders. Thanks in advance, Tony

  3. Hi Tony,

    You’re gonna LOVE Hokkaido!
I’m not sure what kind of advice you actually want, but as for a general route, I would do the island clockwise, taking the ocean “Ororo Line” route up to Wakkanai (the northernmost town) and then going either along the Sea of Okhotsk or inland toward Lake Akan, and then circle back west toward Sapporo, maybe riding through the Taisetsu gorge and Mikuni Toge mountain pass.
I would suggest staying at rider houses or campgrounds. The place that rents you your bikes should be able to give you some information on rider houses. If not ask about how to contact D-Net, a “network” of rider houses. Have the Japanese girlfriend call the rider houses a couple of hours before you arrive to let the owners know you’ll be coming (just common courtesy), and try not to arrive too much last 5pm.
    Have a GREAT time!
