I knew a Latino-Chinese couple that hyphenated their names upon marriage. It was pretty neat, essentially looking something like, "Joe and Lucy Rodriguez-Chang" (not their real names)

Hyphens solve some of the problems, but then you run into the same problem one generation down the line. Like your example, though, it can be a cool way to show off the heritage of both sides of the family.
In our case, it made a bad pun: Ohno-Moore="Oh, No more!"
And reversed it ends up sounding like "moron", so we gave up on that option.

"We are an interracial couple living in Japan, and we had to overcome a lot of racist bullshit in order to get married, so racial and cultural issues are a bit more personal and immediate to us than gender issues. My wife gets a kick out of the fact that merely stating her name is a big publc "fuck you" to those who think she's a race-traitor."

As you probably know from discussions we both have participated in over at "Riding Sun", I am pretty conservative. That being said, I like your wife's style. She's directly addressing something that needs to be dealt with in Japanese society, but she isn't doing so just to agitate others. It's a legitimate and courageous stand she is taking, and I respect her forthrightness in a culture where it could have been much simpler for her to 'play along'.

Thanks, I'll pass it on to my wife.

I would never write someone off just becasue they were conservative. I'm happy to talk to anyone who's rational and honest, no matter what side of the arbitrary left/right divide they may find themselves.
